Compounding Solutions To Meet Your Needs…
What is
Compounding?
Compounding is the preparation of a customized medication to solve a problem or
to meet a specific patient need. Compounding pharmacists work together with
physicians and their patients to decide on the most effective therapy for each
individual. Today, an estimated 1% of all prescriptions are compounded daily by
pharmacists working closely with physicians and their patients.
When
is it Appropriate to Compound?
There are many reasons a
patient may need a compounded drug. Sometimes a pharmaceutical company stops
making a drug or that drug is currently unavailable from the manufacturer.
Sometimes a patient needs a dose of medication that isn't commercially
available. By measuring ingredients, a compounding pharmacist can create a
medication in the exact dose needed. When a patient isn't able to take a
medication in its available form (such as a pill), it can often be made into a
different type of delivery system (such as liquid, powder, lozenge, ointment,
cream, gel or suppository). The pharmacist can even add flavorings to make the
taste of a liquid more palatable. Patients who are allergic to fillers or dyes
in commercial medications may have the drugs prepared at a compounding pharmacy
without the problem substance. Some compounding pharmacies will even prepare
medications for animals.
Are
Compounded Medications Safe?
Compounding pharmacists may only use FDA-approved ingredients in their
medications. And except for special circumstances, they may not duplicate drugs
that are available from a drug manufacturer (under a doctor's orders, however,
they can produce the same drug in a different strength or form).
Are
Compounded Medications Expensive?
Compounded medications may cost a little more than traditional prescription
drugs because they take time to prepare and each prescription must be
individually made. Patients with health insurance plans usually need to pay for
compounded drugs out-of-pocket because compounded medications do not have
standard Drug Code Reference Numbers. However, some plans provide some
reimbursement after submission of a claims form. Patients need to check with
their insurance company to determine their actual level of coverage.
Who Benefits
From Compounded Prescriptions?
By utilizing available resources, pharmacists, physicians, and most importantly,
patients, are able to benefit from compounded prescriptions. Pharmacists and
physicians are able to develop a strong patient relationship along with the
satisfaction that a patient has received treatment that would otherwise, not be
an option. Patients receive the true benefits of pharmacy compounding by
receiving a specialized dose, alternate formulation, dye-free preparation, more
palatable suspension, or commercially unavailable medication.
